About 3 thousand people were detained in Belarus as a result of the riots. This was reported in the Interior Ministry of Belarus on August 10.
“On the night from 9 to 10 August 2020, there were recorded focal points of citizens’ gathering in the area of polling stations and central squares in 33 settlements. In total, about 3 thousand people were detained across the country for participation in unauthorized mass events, including about 1 thousand in Minsk and more than 2 thousand in other regions of the country,” reads the report, published in the Telegram-channel of the Ministry.
More than 50 citizens and 39 police officers were injured in the clashes, some of whom were hospitalized.
Earlier Monday, Monday, Belarusian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Olga Chemodanova denied reports of those killed during the unauthorized protests in Minsk.
Presidential elections in Belarus were held on August 9.
In the evening, mass unauthorized protests began in several cities of the republic – more than 120 people were detained. The protesters expressed their disagreement with the results of the election process. The violations were accompanied by destruction of property and resistance to the authorities. Stones, pieces of pavement tiles and incendiary mixtures were thrown at law enforcement officers. In response to the unauthorized rallies the Belarusian law enforcers had to use tear gas and light-noise grenades against the protesters in Minsk.
