An EPL footballer was detained on child molestation charges

An English Premier League (EPL) player has been detained on suspicion of sexual misconduct against minors, Eurosport reported July 20.

“Officers detained a 31-year-old man on Friday, July 16, 2021, on suspicion of child sex offenses,” police said in a statement.

It is noted that Greater Manchester Police released the suspect on bail the same day. In July, law enforcement officers conducted a search of the player’s home.

The player’s name was not disclosed, but journalists learned that it was a regular-season player and international athlete who “received multimillion-dollar transfer fees.”

Representatives of the player’s club, who are also unnamed, confirmed in an interview with The Mirror that their player is under investigation and the player is suspended until the investigation is completed.

In September 2020, former Real Madrid and German national team player Christoph Metzelder was charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. That same month, the athlete confessed.

Metzelder played for Real Madrid from 2007 to 2010. As part of the team became the champion of Spain. Metzelder played 47 games for the German national team, becoming silver medalist (2002) and bronze medalist (2006) of the World Championships and silver medalist of the European Championship (2008).
