Austria allows euthanasia for seriously ill people

The Austrian government has allowed terminally ill and long-term seriously ill citizens to exercise the right to indirect euthanasia starting in 2022. The corresponding decision was made last October and came into force on January 1, 2022.

Now the above-mentioned category of people can use this service by writing a special application. In this case, to approve indirect euthanasia should two doctors, one of which is a specialist in palliative care, reported Reuters.

At the same time, this type of indirect euthanasia will remain prohibited for minors.

Earlier, at the end of January 2021, the Portuguese parliament voted for legalization of euthanasia. It was reported that incurably ill and long suffering patients in unbearable pain would be able to undergo this procedure. However, they must be over 18 years old and considered mentally fit to make this decision.

On November 22, Germany decided to ban euthanasia for people who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus. It was specified that the procedure itself, as well as the preparation for it, requires not only a special responsibility and an informed decision on the part of the person, but also human intimacy during the procedure.
