Belarusian opposition was included in the list of finalists of the Sakharov Prize 2020

The European Parliament included the Belarusian opposition in the list of finalists of the 2020 “For Freedom of Thought” award named after Academician Andrei Sakharov. This was announced on Monday, October 12, the website of the EP.

The final list of nominees includes “democratic opposition in Belarus represented by Coordination Council – initiative of brave women and figures in the sphere of politics and civil society”.

Also the finalists of Sakharov prize were environmental activists Berta Caceres from Honduras and Archbishop Mosul Najib Musa Mikail.

In a resolution adopted in September 2020, the European Parliament condemned the Belarusian authorities for their brutal suppression of peaceful protests.

Earlier Monday, Belarusian law enforcement agencies said they were ready to use military weapons to maintain order in the streets of Minsk.
