Blinken believes that Russia wants to restore the Soviet Union

The Russian authorities seek to restore the order that reigned under the Soviet Union in geopolitical terms. This statement was made by U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on January 9.

In his view, this is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s goals.

“And that means restoring a sphere of influence over countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union,” Blinken stressed on CNN.

The secretary of state added that such an outcome is “unacceptable” to the United States.

In early December, U.S. Undersecretary of State Victoria Nuland made a statement that Putin allegedly wants to recreate the USSR.

At the same time, the Russian leader himself stressed in June 2021 that it was pointless and impractical to recreate the Soviet Union.

“Otherwise, we may face social issues that will be impossible to solve, and even some issues of dilution of the state-forming ethnic core,” said the head of state.
