British man accidentally threw away hard drive with $273 million in bitcoins

James Howells, a resident of Newport, Wales, threw away the hard drive of his computer with 7.5 thousand bitcoins.

When the IT professional first noticed the loss, the value of the cryptocurrency on the hard drive reached $9 million. At the current rate, there are $273 million worth of bitcoins on his hard drive.

He dumped the hard drive back in 2013, when the exchange rate was times lower. Now Howells is willing to pay local authorities more than $71 million if he is allowed to excavate the landfill.

Newport officials have denied the man’s request.
