California’s governor is sued for helping illegal immigrants

The Center for American Freedom, a conservative non-profit organization, sued California Governor Gavin Newsome to prevent him from providing $75 million in financial aid to illegal immigrants who are unable to receive unemployment benefits amid the Coronavirus crisis.

The organization requested the State Supreme Court to order an injunction against the governor’s initiative, stressing that California and federal laws prohibit unemployment benefits for those who are in the country illegally.

“This is taxpayer money, which can only be distributed by the legislature. This is not a stash that the governor can use at his discretion,” said the head of the organization, a lawyer from San Francisco, Harmith C. Dillon.

Newsom representatives have not commented yet.
