David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, died Tuesday, January 11, at the age of 66 in Italy. This was announced by his press secretary Roberto Quillo on Twitter.

David Sassoli is an Italian journalist, politician and president of the European Parliament since 2019. He was born on May 30, 1956. He began his career as a journalist by collaborating with small newspapers and news agencies. In 1986, he joined the professional association of journalists. He was vice director of TG1 television channel from 2006 to 2009.
In 2009 he was elected to the European Parliament (EP) from the Democratic Party (PD). On June 17, 2009, he became the head of the DP delegation to the European Parliament. In 2014 he was re-elected to the EP, in July of the same year he was elected vice-president of the European Parliament (re-elected in 2017). On July 3, 2019, he became President of the European Parliament.
