Erdogan stated that Turkey suffered a lot of damage due to emulation to the West

The thoughtless imitation of the West has caused the greatest damage to Turkey. This was stated by the president of the republic Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaking on October 19 at Istanbul Ibn Khaldun University.

“Political and economic independence is based on spiritual independence. The growing power of the Western world has made it unhealthy to discuss this issue in our society,” Erdogan was quoted as saying.

According to him, now that “Turkey has regained confidence in itself politically, economically and militarily, such discussions have been held on fairer terms”. At the same time, the promotion of national traditions in the field of culture and education is not yet ensured at the desired level, the Turkish leader emphasized.

On July 10 this year, it became known that the President of Turkey signed a decree to turn the St. Sophia Cathedral into a mosque.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Russian Orthodox Church opposed the change of the status of the site. The State Duma drafted an appeal to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on the issue of this temple. In addition, UNESCO urged the Turkish side not to make this decision.
