European Parliament proposes to disconnect Russia from SWIFT over ” aggression in Ukraine”

European MPs are in favor of disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT bank payment system and propose to give up Russian oil and gas if the “aggression in Ukraine” continues. This is stated in a draft resolution submitted by the European Parliament.

The European Parliament stresses that if the military build-up in the future will escalate into an invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the EU must make it clear that the price of such action will be serious: in such circumstances, the import of oil and gas must immediately stop, Russia should be disconnected from SWIFT payment system, all assets in the EU of oligarchs close to the Russian authorities and their families should be frozen, visas should be canceled,” the document says.

The document suggests launching anti-Russian sanctions for corruption crimes and extending them to Russian businessmen, stopping the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, as well as disconnecting Russia from the SWIFT bank payment system.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba asked the West to consider disconnecting Russia from SWIFT. He said this at a meeting of EU foreign ministers on 19 April.
