Habib Nurmagomedova Abdulmanap, father and coach of the lightweight UFC Absolute Combat Champion (UFC), spoke about his son’s possible play against American Tony Ferguson in Belarus.
The fight was scheduled for April 18 at the UFC 249 tournament in New York City, but the state athletic commission has banned the sports events due to the threat of coronavirus proliferation. Nurmagomedov March 30 said he couldn’t leave Russia because of temporary border closures, while UFC is looking for another rival, Ferguson.
“Thank you very much to the head of state – Alexander Lukashenko. For what he offered. Why not consider this country? I think it’s one of the best options,” Nurmagomedov is quoted as saying.
Belarus is the only country in Europe where it’s allowed to hold competitions against the background of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the latest data, more than 45 thousand people have died of COVID-19, while 189 thousand have recovered. The total number of those infected exceeded 893,000.
