Germany rejects Russia’s proposal to limit space weapons

Germany refused to support the Russian initiative on non-proliferation of weapons in space.

The German Foreign Ministry also noted that Moscow’s proposal does not correspond to the views of Berlin and Brussels on security in this space. The diplomats admitted that Germany and the EU want to prevent an arms race in space. An own European base is being created for this purpose.

Previously, the US refused to accept the Russian initiative. They started to create space forces there. The Federation Council called this behavior a consequence of the Americans’ desire to withdraw from all restraining agreements.

The proposal was put forward in late February. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on the West to develop generally acceptable measures that could prevent a force confrontation in space. Russia unilaterally pledged not to place weapons in space back in 2004.
