Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet with U.S. First Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Bigan on Tuesday, August 25, in Moscow. The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova announced this on August 24.
“Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry plans to receive U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Bigan on Tuesday,” – said Zarakhova.
Last week it was reported that U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Bigan plans to meet with former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in Vilnius on Monday.
It is planned that the meeting will be part of efforts to resolve the crisis that has arisen in Belarus. In Moscow, the American diplomat also plans to discuss the Belarusian settlement.
On the eve, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov admitted that former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya might have been pressured. After leaving for Lithuania, the politician said “that he wants to take care of family affairs, take care of children,” but now again called for protests, he said.
On August 9, presidential elections were held in Belarus, where for the sixth time in a row the incumbent head of the country Alexander Lukashenko won with the result of 80.1%. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya gained about 10%, her supporters did not recognize the election results.
After that, the country’s protests have not subsided. Tikhanovskaya herself went to Lithuania. The EU countries, Canada and the U.S. have already announced that they did not recognize the election results and threatened to sanction Lukashenko.
