Makron said Syrian Islamists participated in the battles in Karabakh

France has information that Syrian Islamists are involved in the fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh. President Emmanuelle Macron said Thursday, October 1, before the EU summit.

“I also want to be clear: today we have information that credibly indicates that jihadi fighters have left the theater of hostilities in Syria to join the fighting in Karabakh. According to the French president, this is a new factor that seriously affects the situation. It will be discussed, among other things, in the EU negotiations.

Macron stressed that he was going to exchange all information about the situation in Karabakh with Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump.

The French president also stated that he was going to send a plane for the journalists of the newspaper Le Monde who had been shot at in Karabakh.

The French leader emphasized that the conflict in Karabakh should be solved peacefully. The Minsk group aims at achieving a ceasefire and meeting of all parties at the negotiating table.

Earlier on October 1 Putin, Trump and Makron issued a joint statement on Karabakh. It says they strongly condemn the escalation of violence in the region, offer condolences to the families of the victims and call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

On the same day, it became known that a group of journalists had come under fire from the Azerbaijani army in the Karabakh town of Martuni. Two representatives of the French newspaper Le Monde and a reporter from the Armenian 24news were wounded and the Russian Dmitry Yelovsky was not injured.
