Mali’s interim president is assassinated

Unknown assailants carried out an assassination attempt on the interim president of Mali Assimi Goit. According to France Press, the politician was attacked with a knife.

Other details have not yet been given.

On May 24, the military in Mali arrested Interim President Ba Ndau and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane and transported them to the Kati army base near the capital Bamako. At the time, Vice President Assimi Goita said he relieved the president and prime minister of their duties for violating the transitional charter. A military council headed by Goita took over the country.
