German Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed the country’s commitment to support the World Health Organization (WHO) at a G7 leaders’ videoconference on the COVID 19 pandemic. This was reported on the website of the German government.
According to Merkel, coronavirus proliferation can only be stopped with a coordinated international response. The Chancellor also supported the initiative of the chairman of the European Union Commission Ursula von der Leyen to hold a videoconference of donors on COVID-19 in early May.
On April 14, President Donald Trump reported that Washington was terminating funding for WHO because the organization had made mistakes and concealed data on coronavirus proliferation. The day before, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the White House’s desire to find those responsible for the pandemic and bring them to justice.
UN Secretary General António Guterres then said the United States had chosen the wrong time to stop funding WHO.
