German Chancellor Angela Merkel laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow on Friday, August 20.
Merkel drove to the Alexandrovsky Garden, passed the guard of honor and laid a wreath with ribbons in the colors of the German flag. The laying of the wreath was followed by a minute of silence and then the guard of honor orchestra played the German national anthem. At the end of the ceremony the Chancellor got into the car, which took her to the Kremlin for the talks.
This visit of Merkel to Russia will be her last trip to Russia in the status of the Chancellor of Germany, because at the upcoming parliamentary elections in September, the politician will not be a candidate for this post.
It is expected that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Merkel will discuss the state and prospects of bilateral cooperation of Germany and Russia in various fields, and consider a number of topical international and regional issues. Afghanistan will also become one of the topics of talks between the heads of states.
It became known on August 13 that Merkel will visit the Russian capital on Friday.
