Merkel stated the need to maintain a dialogue with Russia

Despite disagreements, it is necessary to remain in a dialogue with Russia. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said this on Tuesday, April 20, during an address to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).

“In general, we have a lot of conflicts with Russia, which unfortunately complicate our relations. But I remain the person who keeps saying: we have to talk to each other. <...> We have to stay in dialogue,” she said, speaking by video link.

Merkel also said that Germany would continue trade with Russia, including in the energy sector.

Earlier, on March 17, Christoph Leitl, president of the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry, admitted that Europe had made mistakes in its relations with Russia. In his opinion, the relations between Russia and Europe have reached the lowest point but there is a chance to reset them. For this purpose, it is necessary to “apply a creative approach” in order to find new solutions, in particular to establish economic cooperation and cooperation in the spheres of science and culture.

At the end of January, the former chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany Matthias Platzeck stated that it was important to restore mutually beneficial relations between Russia and Europe. In his opinion, the European Union countries will not be able to solve the challenges they face without Moscow’s participation.
