America’s Cup 2021 came to an end at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Two of the continent’s most decorated teams, Brazil and Argentina, met in the final.
“The Albiceleste opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. Rodrigo de Paul gave an excellent pass from deep inside the penalty area. Renan Lodi slipped the ball onto Angel di Maria’s foot and PSG’s midfielder neatly threw the rebound over the goalkeeper into the net.
In the 52nd minute, Risharlison equalized and slotted a shot into the goal, but the lineman was correct when he crossed for offside. Emiliano Martinez kept out two dangerous chances – first, after Rischarlison’s close-range shot in the 54th minute and after Gabigol’s free-kick in the 87th.
Argentina won 1-0 and claimed their first America’s Cup in 28 years. The last time they won the continental championship was in 1993. For the Argentines, it’s their 15th overall victory at the tournament, tying them with Uruguay for the titles (Brazil is third with nine championship trophies).
Colombia won the bronze medal in the third-place match. On the night of July 9-10 they beat Peru 3-2, the decisive goal in the 92nd minute was scored by Luis Diaz.
Lionel Messi won his first adult title at the international level. The only previous winners with the Albiceleste were Olympic gold at the Beijing 2008 games. The former Barcelona captain has lost four finals in his 34 years, at 2007, 2015, and 2016 America’s Cups as well as the 2014 World Cup.
Messi shared top scorer status with Colombia’s Diaz (both with four goals) and was the tournament’s top scorer with five assists.
