The International Olympic Committee regrets that the Iranian authorities have ignored a request to pardon wrestler Navid Afkari, who was executed on Saturday for killing a man in 2018, the IOC press office said.
“Very sad news – the execution of wrestler Navid Afkari in Iran. The IOC is shocked by today’s announcement. IOC President Thomas Bach personally addressed the Supreme Leader and President of Iran during the week and asked for mercy for Navid Afkari, while respecting the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the report said.
“It is deeply saddening that the calls of athletes from all over the world and all the work of the IOC together with the NOC of Iran, United World Wrestling and the National Iranian Wrestling Federation have not achieved our goal. Our thoughts are with Navid Afkari’s family and friends,” it says.
Navid Afkari was sentenced to death for participating in street demonstrations, setting up special groups to overthrow the government and killing a security officer. At the same time, the athlete claimed that he had confessed under torture.
