NATO is calling an emergency meeting due to the U.S. withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies

On Friday, an emergency meeting of the NATO Council will be held in connection with the U.S. decision to withdraw from the Treaty on Open Skies, a diplomatic source in Brussels said.

The meeting will be held at ambassadorial level. The source said the meeting will discuss “the implications of this decision for European and Euro-Atlantic security and the conventional arms control regime.

An official representative of the British government said that the UK “understands the concerns about Russia’s non-compliance”, but “remains committed to the treaty”.

London called the United States “the closest ally” and stated that it “continues to work with them for common security and prosperity”.

As a reminder, Russia demanded explanations from the U.S. regarding the statement of U.S. President Donald Trump on his withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies. Russia, she said, also has a number of claims against Washington.
