A devastating storm has swept through the Midwest USA. The wind speed exceeded 44 m/s. Hundreds of thousands of people were left without electricity. Trees were falling on cars, roofs were falling off. The authorities estimate weather damage at over $500 million. The states of Iowa and Illinois were hardest hit.

In Brazil, fires are destroying the Pantanal. South America’s “Heart” is burning on 80,000 hectares. The flame comes close to a wildlife sanctuary located in the area. Firefighters’ work is complicated by hot weather and wind. The Pantanal is a unique place with a diverse ecosystem.
