New Caledonians voted against independence from France

Residents of the French administrative and territorial unit of New Caledonia voted against independence from France in a referendum. This was announced by TV channel France24 on October 4.

In 2018, the region has already held a similar referendum, then the majority of voters also supported further stay in the country.

France declared the islands of New Caledonia its possession in 1853. The region is located in the Pacific Ocean, there is one of the largest lagoons in the world. The population of New Caledonia is more than 245 thousand people.

At present, an agreement between the federal authorities of France and the administration of New Caledonia in 1998, according to which the region can organize a vote on its independence twice with a difference of two years.
