Restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic forced the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics to change the procedure for awarding the winners and medalists.
According to the head of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, the awarding ceremony will be significantly changed because of the high risk of spread of coronavirus infection. Athletes themselves put on their medals at award ceremonies.
“The medal will be brought on a tray, and then the athlete will take the medal himself and put it around his neck. The person who puts the medal on the tray will do so only with sanitized gloves, so the athlete can be sure no one has touched it before,” the AP quoted Bach as saying.
The Tokyo Olympics begin July 23 and run through Aug. 8.
