Doria Ragland, 64, Meghan Markle’s mother, just had a granddaughter. Doria is well known for her close relationship with daughter Meghan and son-in-law Prince Harry, who has previously spoken of the affection he feels for his mother-in-law. She is believed to have fully supported Meghan in her quest to return to the United States.
In addition to her close relationship with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Doria is reportedly friends with television legend Oprah Winfrey, who interviewed Harry and Meghan for CBS in March.
During their interview, the Dukes of Sussex lashed out at the royal family with a series of accusations, including allegations of racism and impairment of their mental health. Prince Harry then took pity on his brother Prince William and father Prince Charles, whom he described as “trapped” within the monarchy.
As it turns out, Oprah wanted to do this interview while Prince Harry and Meghan were living with the royal family, but all previous requests had been denied by palace officials. Oprah wasn’t backing down, however, and rumors surfaced that she had “bribed” Doria to try to arrange the interview through her.
Oprah Winfrey revealed that she “really liked the story” that said she was trying to gain Doria’s trust by giving her “gifts.
“Do you know what those gifts were?
We had kumquat dessert for lunch, and she said: “I love kumquats,” and I said: “‘I have a kumquat tree, do you want kumquats?’
I tell you for all the people who said I was giving her gifts: I’m trying to bribe her for an interview with kumquats.”
A kumquat is a tropical fruit of the citrus family.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex has lavished praise on her mother in the past, describing her as her “best friend,” while she was the only member of Meghan’s family present at her wedding to Harry. Doria was also mentioned during her CBS conversation with Oprah, where Meghan praised her for not speaking publicly despite the “obsession” surrounding her family.
She recalled that “you never hear [Doria] do interviews,” adding that her mother “remained in silent dignity for four years,” watching her daughter struggle with the pressures of royal life.
Oprah’s stunning interview led to reports of Doria’s comments about Harry and Meghan’s decision to sever ties with the Royal Family last year. Citing a desire to lead a “financially independent” life, the couple withdrew from their royal duties. Doria herself was “very concerned” about Meghan’s life, the insider claimed, and was “pleased that her daughter was putting her mental health and well-being first.”
A friend told The Daily Mail that Meghan’s “plan all along” was to “eventually leave the UK and build her own empire with Harry.”
They added just after the split last year:
“Doria is very true to herself, and so, of course, she will continue to encourage Meghan to follow a lesser path.”
Harry himself is known to share a close bond with Doria, and reports last year claimed he even referred to his mother-in-law as “mom.” According to The Sun, another insider described Doria as “an absolute tower of strength” – “not just for Meghan, but for Harry, too.”
“He obviously doesn’t have a mom he can turn to for advice, but he’s always been incredibly close to Doria and has never been as close as he is now.
Harry has tremendous respect for her and her judgment, so he and Megan both talked to her about what they were going to do.”
“She was the epitome of calm about everything, and Meghan and Harry trust her and her judgment 100 percent.”
