President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had a telephone conversation on Saturday, October 24. This was reported by Telegram channel “Pool of the First”.
“Pompeo called Lukashenko. The president of Belarus and the US secretary of state just spoke on the phone,” the publication says.
The details of the conversation are not given yet. As BelTA notes, the conversation was initiated by the American side.
Mike Pompeo was on a visit to Belarus in February as part of his European tour. During those talks, the U.S. secretary of state said that the U.S. authorities did not give Minsk a choice – to cooperate with Moscow or Washington.
In September, Pompeo called on the Belarusian authorities to stop using violence against participants of unauthorized rallies. According to him, the USA and the EU are discussing the possibility of introducing additional sanctions against Belarus.
After the presidential election in Belarus on August 9, in which Lukashenko won, protests are held in the country. In the European Union and the USA negatively perceived the actions of security services at the rallies and applied sanctions against the current authorities in the republic.
