A rare collectors’ item autographed by American basketball player Michael Jordan was sold at a Heritage auction for a record $1.44 million, reported TMZ Sports on February 6.
The card was released in 1997 in a quantity of 23 pieces. It has a “clear signature” and a piece of Jordan’s jersey, which the athlete wore in the legendary 1992 National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Game.
The buyer’s name was not disclosed.
The previous record for collectible cards with Michael Jordan was $915,000 and was set a few months ago also at a Heritage auction.
Last August the athlete’s sneakers were sold for $615,000 at Christie’s auction.
This lot broke the record for a pair of sneakers Jordan set in May of that year – then basketball player’s shoes, in which he played his debut season, went under the hammer at auction at Sotheby’s for $ 560 thousand.
Michael Jordan is a two-time Olympic champion (1984, 1992) and a six-time NBA champion with Chicago. He also played for Washington, where he finished his career in 2003.
Jordan was named the NBA Most Valuable Player five times and participated in the All-Star Game 14 times. For his phenomenal leaping ability, Michael was nicknamed Air Jordan and His Air.
