Riots continue on the streets of Belfast amid protests

Protests in Belfast have degenerated into riots. Demonstrators were dispersed with water cannons. Demonstrators threw firecrackers and bricks at law enforcers. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called for intra-party talks on the issue of the protests. Johnson also expressed concern about what is happening.

The unrest in Northern Ireland has been going on for about two weeks. 55 police officers were injured during the protests. Dozens of protesters were arrested. Protests are taking place in areas where Loyalists live. This part of the citizens advocates close ties with London. Loyalists oppose Irish nationalists, who, on the contrary, advocate more independence for the region. Discontent was exacerbated by Brexit – the Loyalists opposed leaving the EU – and the pandemic.
