Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told his U.S. counterpart Mike Pompeo after the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani that actions to eliminate officials of a sovereign state violate international law. Moscow urges Washington to abandon forceful methods of solving international problems, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday after a telephone conversation.
“Lavrov stressed that targeted actions of a UN member-state to eliminate officials of another UN member-state, and, moreover, on the territory of a third sovereign state without his knowledge, flagrantly violate the principles of international law and deserve to be condemned,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“The Russian minister pointed out that this move by the U.S. is fraught with serious consequences for regional peace and stability, does not contribute to efforts to find solutions to complex problems that have accumulated in the Middle East, but on the contrary – leads to a new round of escalation. Moscow urges Washington to abandon illegal methods of force to achieve its goals in the international arena and to solve any problems at the negotiating table,” the Russian diplomatic mission stressed.
