U.S. actions have increased tensions in the Middle East, which could lead to a global conflict. This opinion was expressed by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs Alexei Chepa.
According to him, heavy consequences can be avoided through negotiations.
“The situation is very difficult. Because of the U.S. actions that have led to today’s consequences, we see tension that could lead to the outbreak of a major conflict in the region and in the world as a whole […] We need to do everything possible to stop the further progress of this conflict,” RT quotes a deputy.
The situation in the Middle East escalated in late December, after the U.S. military struck at Hezbollah facilities in Syria and Iraq.
In response, supporters of the movement attacked the US Embassy in Baghdad. On January 3, the U.S. Air Force conducted an operation during which the head of the Iranian Al-Quds special unit, General Kasem Suleimani, was killed.
January 8, Tehran launched a missile attack on two American military bases in Iraq.
U.S. President Donald Trump said he was not going to use military force against Iran, but would impose sanctions.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Washington’s actions, which go beyond the existing international legal system, have led to an escalation of the situation in the Middle East region.
According to Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov, the risk of military conflict between the U.S. and Iran still remains.
