With the help of aerial fire of the Russian Air Force and Syrian Air Force, as well as artillery fire in the central part of the ATS managed to eliminate 327 fighters and 134 hiding places of gangs. A representative of the Russian group in Syria said on Tuesday, August 25.
Between August 18 and 24, 2020, Syrian government troops, together with Russian troops, prepared and conducted a large-scale operation to identify and defeat the gangs.
“Through the strikes of the Russian Air Force and Syrian Air Force, artillery fire and the actions of reconnaissance and search groups of special purpose in the area of the “white desert” 327 fighters were eliminated, 134 shelters, 17 observation points, seven warehouses with material resources and five underground stores of weapons and ammunition were destroyed,” the serviceman said.
According to him, over the past month, in the so-called white desert area in the central Syrian Arab Republic, there has been a significant increase in the activity of gangs formed by former Igilovites (the terrorist group IG (“Islamic State”), which is banned in Russia). A representative of the Russian group said that most of the guerrillas appeared in the area after the “amnesty” granted by the so-called autonomous administration of north-eastern Syria, controlled by the US.
The serviceman said that the recruits of the scattered Igilov gangs in the “white desert” are undergoing special training in the south and south-east of Syria in the territories of Al-Tanf zone and Syrian Za’evfraternity, occupied by the US. In order to destabilize the situation in the region, the militants sabotage transport communications and acts of sabotage at oil and gas facilities in Syria and attack Syrian army patrols and posts.
A representative of the Russian group stressed that the terrorists are undermining Syria’s social and economic recovery and establishing relations between local Arab tribes and Damascus. In that connection, the operation to clear the “white desert” of the remnants of bandit groups will continue until armed groups operating there are completely destroyed.
As a result of Igilov’s actions on August 18, a Russian senior military adviser, Major General V. Gladkikh, was killed by an improvised explosive device in Deir ez-Zor province.
