People cannot hibernate and inhibit metabolism, which would be very useful for long space flights. Scientists, accordingly, have to develop incredible technologies that will make hibernation possible during interstellar flights.
After the American scientists from the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Maryland and Harvard Medical School conducted experiments with hibernation of dogs and pigs, immersing animals into hibernation and replacing their blood with cold saline, the question of conducting similar experiments with the participation of humans is ripe. Last year, a group of scientists headed by Samuel Tisherman finally received permission for such an experiment – a patient with heart failure who lost half of his blood as a result of a serious injury became a test subject.
The scientists decided that if the patient is cooled down sharply (within 15 minutes) to 10 degrees Celsius, the metabolic reactions in his body will slow down and the cells will survive without oxygen supply. This is how it happened. Patient with a gunshot wound to the abdomen was replaced with blood with a cold salt solution, and then placed on the operating table in a state similar to clinical death.
Within the next two hours, surgeons eliminated the cause of the blood loss, and then the patient was replaced with saline blood, heated his body to normal temperature and started the heart. The patient survived. This allows us to hope for the creation of technologies that will be used to plunge people into anabiosis during long space flights.
