Six tourists died in a cliff collapse in Brazil

In a canyon near the Brazilian town of Capitolio in Minas Gerais state there was a cliff collapse on speedboats with tourists, as a result six people were killed and more than 20 other people were injured. This was reported on January 8 by TV channel CNN Brasil.

Earlier in the day the spokesman for the rescue service of the state Pedro Aihara confirmed the loss of life, two of them – men, the identity of the others are being established.

He also reported that the collapse of eroded rocks triggered heavy rainfall in the region. In addition, there may be further damage to the natural landscape, Aihara added. The Navy got involved in the investigation of the accident.

According to the TV channel, at least 32 people were injured when the cliff collapsed, 23 of them were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, and were released after examination by medics. Two injured people with open fractures are known to be in a medical facility.

The Minister of Tourism of Brazil, Gilson Machado expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the injured, and also stated that the authorities are doing everything to investigate the causes of the incident.

At least 10 people in southwest China’s Sichuan province were missing in September due to a landslide caused by heavy rains in the city of Ya’an in Tianquan county.
