Six-year-old child killed in Washington shooting

Police said a six-year-old girl was killed and five adults — three men and two women — were injured in a mass shooting in southeast Washington late Friday night. The victims were admitted to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to Assistant Police Chief Ashan Benedict, officers heard the sound of gunshots in the business district around Malcolm X and Martin Luther King avenues around 11:10 p.m. When they responded, the suspects had already fled the scene, which is about eight miles from the U.S. Capitol.

According to statistics from the Metropolitan Police Department, there were 198 murders in Washington, D.C., in 2020, a 19 percent increase over the previous year’s 166. Meanwhile, last year was the third consecutive year in which homicides in the U.S. capital increased, NBC News reported. Shootings and murders have also increased in other cities around the country. President Joe Biden’s administration said in June that special law enforcement teams were sent to five U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C., to crack down on smugglers who were supplying weapons to criminal gangs in those cities.
