A rare painting by the Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York in January next year. It is a portrait of “Young man with a medallion”, which dates back to 70-80s of the XV century.
According to the curator of the department of works of old masters of the auction house Christopher Apostle, the sale price of the painting will exceed $80 million. Portrait, in his opinion, may become the next canvas that went from the hammer for more than $100 million, as it was with the work of Claude Monet “Haystacks”. Last year it was sold at an auction for $110.7 million.
The Apostle named the portrait one of the greatest works of Botticelli, as well as one of the most outstanding works of Renaissance fine art, which are in private collection.
