Specialists found probiotics that suppress coronavirus

Employees of the Blokhina Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, and representatives of the Novosibirsk Center “Vector” have discovered probiotics capable of suppressing a new type of coronavirus infection.

Russian scientists have found that one of the known strains of lactobacilli shows pronounced activity against a new coronavirus. This is a strain of L. fermentum 90 TC-4 – on its basis a probiotic agent can be created that can effectively inhibit the replication of SARS-CoV-2 in the body and, at the same time, optimize the work of the gastrointestinal tract.

“The beneficial lactobacilli can be used to prevent coronavirus infection. Plus, they can be used as a supportive nutritional supplement directly during illness. In addition, there is evidence that a probiotic based on beneficial bacteria is particularly effective in supporting children,” says Irina Solovyova, head of the laboratory of the human microbiome and means of its correction.

Now scientists want to conduct clinical trials of the new probiotic in medical institutions. It is assumed that the new remedy will be included in the treatment protocols provided for COVID-19.
