The Americans have invented a word for people who buy food because of coronavirus

The site of the popular English online dictionary Urban Dictionary has a new word for people who rushed to buy food in mass stores because of the threat of coronavirus proliferation – Covidiot.

It comes from the name of a disease caused by a new type of coronavirus, COVID-19 and the word “idiot”. As the creators of the neologism point out, Covidiot may also refer to people who do not follow the authorities’ advice on issues of hygiene and personal safety in a coronavirus pandemic.

As an example of the use of the new word Urban Dictionary cites two statements. The first is, “have you seen this covidiot with 300 rolls of toilet paper in the cart?” And two, “this covidiot hugs everyone it meets.”

Urban Dictionary was created in 1999 by Aaron Peckham, a student at California State University of Technology. It contains mostly slang expressions, which are not defined in standard dictionaries.
