On the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, Pope Francis called the possession of nuclear weapons immoral and called for their abandonment. This was reported by the Adnkronos news portal on August 6.

“For the prosperity of the world, it is necessary that everyone give up weapons, especially those as powerful and destructive as nuclear weapons, which can paralyse and destroy cities and entire countries,” said in a pontificate message addressed to the authorities in Hiroshima.

Using nuclear energy for military purposes is as immoral as possessing nuclear weapons, he said.

In November 2019, the Pope made an apostolic trip to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where he made statements about the crime of using nuclear weapons.
