The Turkish Coast Guard fires warning shots at a Cypriot boat

A Turkish security boat fired warning shots at a Greek Cypriot boat and Coast Guard units in Cyprus. It was stated that the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. near the port of Kato Pyrgos, Lower Pyrgos Province, which is located on the shore of the Gulf of Guzelyurt.

According to local media, the incident occurred when a Greek Coast Guard boat was patrolling coastal areas trying to make sure there were no illegal migrants from Turkey in the waters. Information provided by the Greek police indicated that a Cypriot boat with three people on board spotted a Turkish Coast Guard boat 11 nautical miles from the port and headed towards the fishing shelter of Tilliria, but the Turkish vessel followed the boat and fired four warning shots “to intimidate”.

The police noted that the Greek Foreign Ministry was informed about the incident. There has not yet been an official statement from the Turkish side about the incident, Euronews reports.
