There were clashes with police and mass detentions in downtown New York City

Clashes between Black Lives Matter activists and law enforcement officers began in downtown New York City.

The activists had gathered for a demonstration timed to Martin Luther King Memorial Day, which is celebrated in the United States every third Monday of January. During the rally, however, clashes with police broke out.

“Protesters marched into downtown Manhattan from Brooklyn and are blocking traffic here. Now the police have made an announcement: if they don’t clear the road, there will be arrests. The protesters say, “These are our streets. If we passed the bridge, we’ll stay here,” a Izvestia correspondent told the newspaper.

At least 25 people are reportedly being detained.
