Thomas Markle, 76, gave a big interview on 60 Minutes Australia in which he spoke candidly about how he has no way to connect with his daughter, Meghan Markle, and her husband, Prince Harry, and expressed his attitude toward the older members of the royal family.
In particular, Thomas recalled how he was supposed to walk Meghan down the aisle on her wedding day in May 2018, but was caught off guard by a heart attack a few days before the celebration. In his place, Prince Charles fulfilled that mission. Markle spoke warmly about that episode, noting that she greatly appreciated the noble gesture by Prince Harry’s father.
Thomas said he would love to meet Charles for a beer and a chat because they have so much in common – for example, both have a complicated relationship with their children.
“He seems like a nice guy, and I appreciate the fact that he walked my daughter down the aisle. I certainly couldn’t have dreamed of a better replacement, although I certainly would have liked to do it myself,” Thomas admitted in an interview.
Recall that since her wedding day, Meghan Markle has never met her father. The Duchess of Sussex held a grudge against him because he sold paparazzi pictures of her shortly before the wedding ceremony.
“I’m still confused. I just don’t have an answer as to why I’m doing this. I don’t know what kind of equanimity it takes to do what Meghan did to me and Prince Harry did to his father. And it’s even more awful to do that to a queen who’s in her 90s,” Markle Sr. said.
He admitted with regret that he will probably never see his grandchildren – 2-year-old Archie and a newborn Lilibeth, although he really wants to hold both of them in his arms.
