Former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya became a laureate of the annual John McCain Award, presented by the International Republican Institute. The ceremony was held on Tuesday, October 13, in online mode.
“The violence must stop, and a peaceful transition to a free Belarus must begin. This is our responsibility and the only way forward,” Tikhanovskaya quoted as saying.
This year’s award also went to U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, the organizers of the protests in Hong Kong, the opposition member of the Ugandan parliament and musician Boby Wine.
The International Republican Institute is a non-profit organization that aims to help states build democracy. Its head was previously Republican Senator John McCain, who died in 2018.
