The TikTok service has been collecting MAC addresses through the Android MAC app for over a year, contrary to Google requirements. This was made known by the Wall Street Journal investigation.

The collected identifiers could be used to monitor the network activity of TikTok users and to generate personalized advertising. Since 2015, Apple and Google have prohibited application developers from doing this. However, TikTok stopped collecting MAC addresses only in November last year, reports TWSJ.

A representative of TikTok in a comment on the situation noted that the current version of TikTok does not collect MAC-addresses.

During these weeks, the U.S. authorities are studying suspicions of collecting personal data from TikTok users and transferring this information to China. The White House may seek a ban on the activities of ByteDance Ltd. (developer of TikTok) in the United States unless it is sold to a U.S. company.
