U.S. First Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will discuss the Belarusian settlement, the situation in DPRK and the case of American Paul Willan.
The meeting of high-ranking diplomats will be held in Moscow on August 25-26.
In July, the Foreign Ministry declared the U.S. charges against Russia for excessive severity of Willan’s sentence, who was found guilty of espionage, unsubstantiated. On June 15 US secretary of state Mike Pompeo stated that he was indignant with Whelan’s sentence and demanded his immediate release.
On the same day Moscow city court sentenced Paul Whelan to 16 years of colony.
Earlier Monday, Biegun met with former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya in Vilnius. This meeting was part of the effort to resolve the crisis that has arisen in Belarus.
On the eve, Lavrov admitted that the ex-presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya might have been under pressure. After leaving for Lithuania, the politician said that she “wants to take care of family affairs, take care of children,” but now again called for protests, he said.
