Turkey intercepted six Greek fighter jets in the Eastern Mediterranean

Turkish Air Force intercepted six Greek F-16 fighters in the Eastern Mediterranean region. This was reported by the Turkish Defense Ministry on Friday, August 28.

“Radar systems of the Turkish Air Force recorded 6 F-16 aircraft departing from Crete in the direction of South Cyprus,” – said in a statement on the website of the Ministry of Defense.

The Ministry stressed that they were Greek planes, but Turkish F-16 fighters intercepted them and forced them to leave the area.

In August, the conflict between Turkey and Greece worsened after interference with the Turkish ship Oruc Reis, which was conducting seismic research in the Eastern Mediterranean.

President of Turkey Recep Erdogan stated that Ankara would not give up its plans on exploration in Mediterranean Sea despite threats of sanctions.

In January the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of 28 EU countries instructed the EU Council to prepare new sanctions against individuals and legal entities of Turkey responsible for geological exploration on the shelf of Cyprus.
