UN urges US authorities to stop attacks on journalists

On Wednesday, June 3, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet appealed to the US authorities to stop attacks on the press during mass protests in the country.

“What is happening is an unprecedented attack on journalists. In some cases, they have been attacked or arrested live. It is even more shocking that this is happening in the US, a country where media freedom and expression are fundamental principles central to the identity of the country.

On the eve, police in Washington fired rubber bullets several times at Sputnik producer Nicole Roussel, despite the fact that she was showing her press card. The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted to the incident and viewed it as an unfriendly move by the US authorities.

The Committee to Protect Journalists, an international human rights organization, has already launched an investigation into the shooting of the producer of the Sputnik agency.
