Unknown persons sent a package of ricin poison to U.S. President Donald Trump and it was intercepted, CNN reported citing two law enforcement officers.

Two tests were conducted to confirm ricin. It is noted that all mail for the White House is sorted and checked at a remote site before entering the building.

The FBI and the US Secret Service are currently investigating the case.

CNN journalists have already asked for official comments on the incident.

Ricin is a highly toxic substance. It can be used as a powder, granule or acid. When swallowed, it causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines, followed by liver, spleen and kidney failure and death due to the collapse of the circulatory system.

However, two years ago, the U.S. Secret Service also intercepted a suspicious envelope sent to Trump. Later, a former Navy soldier came under suspicion in the case, but he did not plead guilty.
