US Ambassador to Germany informed of new US sanctions against Nord Stream 2

The new sanctions against the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline can be quickly adopted by the American Congress despite the pre-election struggle. This was stated by US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grennell in an interview with the German edition of Handelsblatt.

Both Democrats and Republicans support the new sanctions, the diplomat said. Thus, the project may be adopted soon.

The purpose of the new sanctions will be to prevent the pipeline from being put into operation. Grenell did not specify how it will be implemented. However, it is known that one of the possibilities may be to fine the companies that provide maintenance of the pipeline.

The German Federal Grid Agency refused to allow Nord Stream 2 AG to withdraw from the Nord Stream 2 project under the EU Gas Directive. According to EU regulations, a gas producer cannot own a pipeline at the same time.

As a result, the German regulator recommended that Nord Stream 2 AG resolve all issues in court. The position of the Federal Network Agency was criticized in the Bundestag. In particular, Klaus Ernst, head of the German government’s economic and energy committee, considered this behavior in relation to a large project to be an alarming sign.

For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the issue of completing the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline would be resolved in the legal field.
