USA provide $19 billion to help farmers affected by the pandemic

President Donald Trump announced a $19 billion program to help farmers affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, The Washington Times reported April 17.

It is specified that $16 billion will be spent on direct payments to farmers, while for the remaining $3 billion the U.S. Department of Agriculture will buy products to redistribute them to food banks due to increasing number of applications for unemployment benefits and increasing number of hungry families.

The publication stresses that farmers were Trump’s key electorate in 2016, and a new presidential election is expected in November.

Earlier, NBC reported that U.S. farmers are forced to destroy their products during the crisis because of quarantine measures, which exacerbated the already ongoing year-long decline in demand for their products.
