Verkhovna Rada deputy commented on Merkel’s refusal to discuss NSP2

An MP of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the party “Opposition Platform – For Life” Vadim Rabinovich on Tuesday, July 13, on his Facebook page commented on German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s refusal to discuss the construction of the Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline in the Normandy format.

“Angela Merkel rejected Vladimir Zelensky’s proposal to discuss Nord Stream – 2 in the Normandy format. She noted that the gas will not be discussed together with the Minsk agreements. The well-mannered woman… sends politely, not to offend”, – wrote the parliamentarian.

Earlier this day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the air of “Russia 24” that the Normandy format is a political platform to discuss the situation in the south-east of Ukraine, and it is impossible to raise questions about commercial projects, such as Nord Stream – 2, there.

On July 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said at a joint briefing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline should be discussed in the Normandy format. The Ukrainian leader believes that this format can be one of the platforms for raising energy issues.

The first deputy head of the Federation Council committee for international affairs, Volodymyr Dzhabarov, said that the Ukrainian president’s statement demonstrated the inadequacy of the politician. He added that such statements would make Berlin refuse to cooperate with Kiev.

“Nord Stream – 2” is being built from Russia to Germany along the bottom of the Baltic Sea in order to directly supply gas to Europe. The EU countries mostly support and participate in the project. The Baltic States, Poland, the U.S. and Ukraine are against it. The latter is afraid of stopping the transit of Russian gas through its territory. At the same time, the U.S. expects to bring its liquefied natural gas to the European market.
